The name of this Surah is derived from word “Ash Shams” mentioned in verse 1, meaning “The Night” appears. This Surah was revealed in Mecca most probably in a later stage of the Prophet Muhammad’s preaching in Mecca when persecution had become severe. This Surah begins by swearing of an Oath : The night and its ability to cover and things, The day and its ability to manifest things and By the creator and who created pairs i.e. males and females.
